It's been a grueling few weeks. Tom's had a deadline that won't stop and so I've been put in charge of shopping for food and cooking meals in addition to cleaning up. To me, these duties are much more perplexing than normal work.
In the photo above it's Sunday morning and I'm walking to the farmers' market at Fort Mason. I'm sulking and pulling a rolling cart behind me. When I pass these flowers-from-another-planet I have to stop and pull my camera out.
Below are my finds from the past two or three walks. Every surface in the house is covered with architectural drawings, so that's what you see in the background.

Ah. Perplexing. I'm going to try that word out. I usually just spit and grind my teeth. I do not like to cook and I do not like to shop. I do not like wending my way through the farmers' market for any thing other than the taste treats, emphasis on the little cups with samples of freshly baked pies.
I'd do fine if I could cook meals that centered around milk shakes. Point is, I've got loads of sympathy for you and I hope Tom hurries up and finishes stuff.
That's a verrry pretty picture of alien flowers.
1. If Tom's busy enough with the deadline, maybe he won't notice if you skimp on the cleanup?
2. Those flowers are gorgeous. Even with the harbor and mountains behind them, they're stealing the show.
3. Your rock collection reminds me of the "mosaic" that bowerbirds assemble around their nests.
What? You have to do Man's Work?
Thank you, Booda and Mary Ann for being so sympathetic. And Namo, GREAT IDEA about the cleanup. (And thanks for the link to the amazing bowerbird photo and little story.) I have never heard of that bird--fantastic!
The bowerbird is very deliberate as to how he decorates his pad. If a person messes with it- say moving one of the details- the bird will move it back where it was before. That's craftmanship!
Pride of Madeira is the name of the plant with the "alien" flowers ..."exotic" actually, since it's not native to California.
Namo: That's really too wonderful.
Hi, Almadenmike: Thanks, you're right! I just googled it, and Wikipedia said: The flowers are much visited by honey bees and the honey from such visits is prized for its flavour.
this post made me smile...shopping, cooking, clean-up? the other day i said to a friend that i don't know how i ever worked full-time...because it's reached the point where i feel overwhelmed at the mere thought of having to check off more than one item on my to-do list in one day (what?! vacuuming AND laundry?) ;)
Oh, I just love your writing and pictures.
Those other-planet plants are one of my favorites! Pride of Madeira. I just snipped some cuttings from my neighbors' hillside and hope they take!
Marilyn, you make me smile.
Gina: Thank you so much.
p.s. I love blue flowers. Have you ever grown Lithodora? (That's what we have vomiting over our wall in the front.)
